Big career and hiring decisions often come down to one question: how well does this person match what this role actually requires? A candidacy assessment answers it in writing, before the decision is made.
What is a candidacy assessment?
A written assessment of one candidate against one role. It answers four questions:
- Where is the fit strong? Requirement by requirement, the evidence that supports the match.
- Where are the gaps? What the role asks for that the record does not yet show.
- How much does each gap weigh? Not every gap matters equally.
- What still needs to be confirmed? The questions that decide true fit, and where to get the answers.
How is it different from a personality test?
It is not a psychometric test. It is a review of the candidate's actual record against the role's requirements. Leadership assessments such as the MLEI or CPI 260 can be added when psychometric data is useful.
How are gaps weighed?
Each gap is placed on two questions: how much it matters to success in the role, and how realistically it can be closed. A gap that matters a lot and is hard to close may decide the outcome. A gap that matters but can be closed becomes part of the plan, such as learning board reporting in the first 90 days.
When do candidates need one?
- Before applying for a significant step up.
- Before a final round or a board interview.
- When deciding between two opportunities.
It shows you your candidacy the way the hiring committee will see it, so you lead with your strongest evidence and prepare for the hard questions.
When do hiring teams need one?
- When choosing between strong finalists.
- When a board, council, or executive team needs a written, balanced view.
- When a candidate looks strong but has a visible gap, and you need to know whether it matters.
What does it take?
At minimum, the job posting and the candidate's resume. Interview notes, a position profile, or context on the team make it sharper.
